HGTV showed a preview of the new show Dina's Party, featuring Dina Manzo of The Real Housewives of New Jersey, as a party planner.
Dina's friend, a Broadway actor named Anthony was throwing a Bon Voyage party for his partner Ron, a news anchor who is moving to Texas. The party's theme was country western, and would be held at Anthony's mom's house. The party was to be a surprise to Ron. Dina suggested a spaghetti western because of Anthony's Italian heritage.
At this point, we saw Dina plan the design for the party. (I guess this is why the show is appropriate for HGTV.) We saw Dina choose some basic design elements and some crazy stuff, like a mechanical bull. We also saw Dina and Anthony try line dancing lessons.
Something interesting was that Dina focused on elements that already in the home and figured out how to incorporate many of them into the party theme.
At the end of the show, we saw Ron arrive at the party and act super appreciative. While that was nice, it didn't make the show remarkable in any way, or even worth watching. Dina - you've got a great television personality. You can do better than this!
I hate to say this because I'm a Dina Manzo fan, but this show just doesn't make the cut. It's only a half an hour, but it moved slowly, and Dina's way better at speaking conversationally than reading from cue cards as narration.
HGTV gave us one episode of Dina's Party today, but the show won't have a series premiere until September 10th.
